Assistant

The Assistant is the everyday agent โ€” the one that answers when no specialist owns the question. It holds the general toolset: web search and fetch, code execution, document and image generation, and the small utilities people actually ask for.

How it works

The Assistant is a plain markdown agent with no engine of its own. What makes it the default is the Orchestrator: a message no specialist owns is handed to the Assistant as a single child run, and its answer is adopted verbatim โ€” no planning, no critic, no synthesis pass rewriting it.

When it answers that way it is also handed the catalog of agents you can see, which is why it can say "the Market Watcher can chart that for you" instead of guessing. It is told to do one quick web search for a current fact rather than inventing one, to suggest Deep Research for a genuine multi-source investigation, and to say plainly when web search is not configured.

What it reaches for

You ask forIt uses
A chart, graph or plotrender_chart โ€” an interactive chart in the thread, never ASCII. It falls back to matplotlib only where a chart cannot be drawn, such as a Slack thread.
A Word, PowerPoint or Excel filegenerate_document, applying a workspace document template when one matches.
A table, a PDF, some analysiscode_execution in the sandbox โ€” pandas, matplotlib, pillow and reportlab are available.
A picture or illustrationgenerate_image.
The date, arithmetic, a unit or currency conversion, a QR codeThe built-in utilities, rather than doing it by hand and getting it wrong.
It has no connectors and no knowledge The Assistant cannot read your mail, your calendar or your organisation's policies, and it does not pretend otherwise โ€” those belong to the connector agents and the Knowledge Agents. If a question needs a tool it does not have, the right outcome is for the router to send it elsewhere; that is what the Orchestrator's routing evals check.
It is a normal agent, so you can change it Every built-in is an ordinary org-ring registry agent with a versioned Agent.md. Edit it, publish a new version, roll back โ€” the platform only re-publishes its own definition when you have not taken it over. See Build & promote.
